Hooray for Regular Girls

February 4, 2011

Last night I watched Next to Normal at the Curran Theater and it everything about it was amazing. The lighting was mesmerizing and design was minimal and perfect. The show is vocally demanding and the cast was impressive. While the show itself was great, the thought that I’m left with is how awesome Emma Hunton is.

As Natalie, she sang with power and precision. And as a bonus, she was believable as a regular teenage girl. She isn’t overly skinny and anorexic looking, nor is she too old to play the part – she just looks like a regular girl. Before I go on, I want to say that I know it’s hard to approach this subject because it’s sensitive but I’ll try and tread lightly.

I’m no expert but I have heard that in order to be successful in musical theater or show business, you have to have “the look.” This “look” includes being impossibly thin and beautiful. As a regular girl with curves, I always wish I could see more actresses on the stage who are more like me. Last night, Hunton inspired me. She is beautiful and curvy and has a phenomenal voice. I’m so glad that her normal body type hasn’t held her back from being successful in her career.

This is a shot from the show so those aren’t her everyday clothes but that’s beside the point. I’m not sure how to wrap this up so… Hooray for Emma Hunton and hooray for regular girls!
